Purging removes obsolete file versions which reduces the database size and also removes the obsolete file versions from the file store. This will have a positive effect of improving performance and freeing up hard disk space, however, it will remove the file history. So although it can be done as part of regular maintenance be careful not to purge too many versions.

File versions can’t be purged if they are the latest version, referenced by another file or referenced by a label.

How To

There are two methods for purging files:

1. Purging individual files | 2. Purge a complete vault

Open Vault and log in as an administrator.

Browse to a folder and select file(s) to be purged. Multiple files can be selected by holding down the Shift or Ctrl button while selecting.

Right click and select Purge,
or,
From the menu select Edit > Purge.

If desired use the Add Files and Remove buttons to change the selection. When the selection is complete click Next.

Specify the criteria for the versions to purge and click Next.

Any versions that can’t be purged are listed. Select the file in the upper window to display the reason. Click Finish.

Results of the purge are displayed. The results can be saved as a text file if desired.

Click Close to exit the purge wizard.

2. Purge a complete vault | 1. Purging individual files

Open the Autodesk Data Management Server Console. Start > All Programs > Autodesk > Autodesk Data Management > Autodesk Data Management Server Console 2010.

Log in as an administrator.

Expand the browser and select the Vault to purge.
Right click and select Purge...
or
Actions > Purge.

Specify the criteria for the versions to purge and click OK.

The purge will take place in the background, allowing you to close the Autodesk Data Management Server Console.

2. The physical files are not be deleted until the next backup. If you are checking to see how much disk space has been saved, wait until after a backup has been run.
