Applies to: Inventor 2008 Inventor 2009 Inventor 2010
You are installing Inventor and all appears to be going well with the first disc. When you are prompted for the second or third disc, you insert it, and the installation appears to "hang" - i.e., it sits there and does nothing for a significant period of time.
How To
The exact nature of this issue is unknown, however it's related mostly relating to the firmware of various DVD drives.
The resolution is to copy the contents of the DVDs to your hard drive temporarily, and install from that temporary location. To complete this:
Insert Disk 1 into the DVD drive.
Open Windows Explorer (either right-mouse click Start > Explore, or select the WINDOWS key + E)
Navigate to your DVD drive. The disk name is AIP_2008_1 in this instance (Figure 1).
Figure 1: Navigate through Windows Explorer to your DVD drive.
Select ALL of the documents on the DVD drive (Ctrl + A) (Figure 2).
Figure 2: Ctrl + A (select all) documents on the DVD.
Right-mouse click and Copy the selected files (Figure 3).
Figure 3: Right-mouse click > Copy the selected files.
On your hard drive, create a new folder, give it an appropriate name (eg. "Inventor Pro 2008 Disks") (Figure 4).
Figure 4: Create a new folder, and appropriately name it.
Paste the contents of disk 1 into this location (Figure 5).
Figure 5: Paste the contents of disk 1 into your newly created folder.
Once this copy has completed, you can insert Disk 2 into the DVD drive.
Repeat most of the process above - navigate to the disk in Windows Explorer, copy all of the files on the DVD, and navigate to your folder (eg. "Inventor Pro 2008 Disks").
Paste the files from Disk 2 into the same directory as the Disk 1 files - You will be prompted with at least one "Confirm Replace" dialog (Figure 6). Select Yes to All whenever prompted regarding overwriting files in this directory.
Figure 6: When prompted to replace any files, select "Yes to All"
Once the files from Disk 2 have finished copying, repeat the process for all of the DVDs in your disc set (eg, Disc 3, 4, 5, 6, etc). Each time you must copy to the exact same folder and overwrite when prompted.
Once this has completed, you can put away the discs. Navigate to the folder you have copied the file contents to, and double-click Setup.exe to commence the installation. It will not prompt you for any discs during installation as all of the files it needs to access are now in the one location.

Notes
Ensure you have plenty of hard drive space before attempting this tip, or the installation. Over 30GB would be desirable. Once you have completed your installation you may delete the folder that you copied the discs to, if you are short on space.
