Creating Deployment Checklist for 2008+ Autodesk Products
In This Tip
You want to know what is involved in creating a deployment image of Inventor 2008 for either standalone or network deployment.
This is a checklist guide to ensure you meet the correct criteria before creating your deployment image.
How To
The Deployment process has changed slightly for 2008 products. The Deployment wizard is no longer installed on the machine; initial deployment creation is done from the DVD, and the deployment process creates both an install and a modify shortcut in the deployment location.
Before creating your deployment image of Inventor 2008 please ensure the following:
1. You must physically be sitting in front of the computer that the deployment image is being created on. Don't use remote desktop; it can cause errors.
2. You must have full permissions to the folder the deployment is being created in - log in as the local administrator before creating the deployment.
3. The computer you're creating your deployment image on must either a) have it's own DVD drive that you're using or b) have a copy of the 2 DVDs on the local drive to create the deployment from. A mapped DVD drive from another computer won't work either. - If you are copying the contents of the DVDs onto the drive, make sure you copy all the files from both disk 1 and 2 to the same location, overwriting files when prompted (there are double-ups).
4. As per normal, please ensure the folder you are creating the deployment in is a shared folder.
5. When creating the deployment image, DO NOT put any spaces in either the Deployment image name, or in the path to the deployment image. - Eg: WRONG: Deployment location: \\server\Autodesk Deployments\Inventor 2008\ Deployment name: Inv 2008 NW Deploy - Eg: RIGHT: Deployment location: \\server\AutodeskDeployments\Inventor_2008\ Deployment name: Inv_2008_NW_Deploy

Autodesk's Best practices for network deployment creation
Follow these guidelines to create a successful network deployment:
Copy the entire installation from the product media to a local hard drive and create the deployment from that location. Click here for more information on this topic.
All deployments should be created and installed by the actual Administrator.
All computers should have the most recent MSI and Windows updates installed.
Verify that all CAD users have full read/write access to the network share where your deployments are located.
Avoid modifying an existing deployment once it is has been used to install a program. Instead, create a new deployment for each modification that you make (for example, when adding profiles, service packs, and so on).
Keep deployments in the same location where they were originally created as long as they are still in use on a computer.
Do not move deployments between servers. If you must do so, you will, at a minimum, need to “modify” that deployment to insert its current location into the deployment structure.
Deployments transferred to other media, such as CDs, DVDs, or USB drives, may not perform as expected because they reference the original deployment location internally and may need to write log files to this location, which is not possible on read-only media.
